If you notice SFU’s flags lowered to half-mast tomorrow, it is for April 28th: Workers Memorial Day. Created in 1984 by Canadian trade unionists and recognized by the federal government in 1991, it has since spread to dozens of countries and is known by many different names:

National Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured on the Job, International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers, World Day for Health and Safety at Work

On Workers Memorial Day, we mourn the deaths and injuries of all those labourers who built and continue to maintain the roads we drive on, the buildings we live in, the power and water we rely on, and the technology on which you are reading this message. Without them, our world would not exist. Without them, it would literally fall to pieces.

To all our fallen brothers and sisters, we say: We remember you.
