VDLC Meeting Tuesday June 17th, 2014
Guest Speaker:
Gwedolyn Reischman from Vancouver Co-op Radio 100.5 FM
- non-profit community run radio station that has 40 years of history
- host radio shows on all sorts of topics including programming radio shows on all sorts of topics including programming such as Red-Eye, Union Maid, and Media Mornings that specifically talk about labor issues
Presidents Report:
- Municipal election vetting committee is currently surveying candidates to find out which ones to endorse
- Upcoming Summer Institute for Women July 8-12th in Victoria-there are a couple of spots left-contact VDLC for more information
- VDLC delegation leaving for China this week to meet with Chinese labour organizations
Reports of Unions:
- BCGEU-fighting the closure of the Victoria Youth and Custody Center (currently the only such facility on the island)
- HEU-tentative agreement reached 5.25% wage increase over 5 years, 2 extra vacation days and a 500 person cap on contracting out over 5 years
- BCTF-government is bargaining in bad faith (reduced wage offers) and government wants to add a clause that if either party does not like to outcome of the court case on class size they can dissolve the collective agreement with 60 days notice
- UNIFOR 114-currently a strike going on at cascade aerospace (military aircraft repair), the employer tried to get an injunction against the union picket lines-union won the case in court, the company is bringing in scabs
Committees/Other Reports:
- Solidarity in Action-ongoing support for locked out IKEA workers and lots of ongoing BCTF solidarity actions
- Young Workers-July 14th at 6 pm "History of Labour Walking Tour" meet at Victory Square
Canadian Labour Congress:
- Annual meeting in May was the largest ever with 4800 delegates in attendance in Montreal
- New President Elected:Hassan Yussuff
- "Together fairness works" ongoing add campaign to educate the public on the work of unions
- Anti-Union bills 377 and 525 currently stalled in the senate for the foreseeable future ( until the fall at least)
