Tentative Agreement Reached

At 4:03 am, after 19 hours of bargaining TSSU and SFU reached a tentative agreement to resolve our labour dispute. This agreement must still be voted on by the membership. Details on an SGM to review the tentative agreement will be posted as soon as they are available. Further and more detailed reports from your committee will be posted as soon as we get some sleep.

The teach in scheduled for Wednesday afternoon will go on as scheduled. This is not a job action, it is only for informational purposes. As of Wednesday morning, members should go to work as normal and do their normal duties.

A back to work agreement which details how the withholding grades job action is to end has also been signed off. This agreement is available here. Please note that under the agreement members are only required to return the grades to the department. Under the agreement members are not required to enter all of the withheld grades into an electronic system. This agreement also protects our members from any employer retribution due to their engaging in job action.

Your Contract Committee would like to thank you for all your hard work and dedication on the picket line. Before job action we had only 2 items signed off. Now we have 37 items, including significant language changes that will benefit many of employee groups. We would also like to thank the members of CUPE 3338 who stood with us, and who we stood with, in solidarity. The involvement of the greater SFU community, including other union locals, faculty members, students and alumni was also crucial to getting SFU to actually bargain with us.

We have a lot to say about the failure of SFU to bargain with us, but bargaining was made even more complicated by the terrible wage controls imposed by the provincial government. These controls not only limited our ability to keep with up inflation, but they also entrenched the longstanding inequalities our members face. We are determined to fix this in the future.
