Nomination Statements:
For position of TSSU Coordinator as sought by Carina Nilsson
I, Carina Nilsson, have been involved in the TSSU in various capacities since I began my Graduate program here at SFU in the Fall of 2008. I was elected as the TSSU's Coordinator in August 2010, and in this short time have quickly realized how important this work is to the members of the TSSU, as well as to myself. Ensuring the fair pay and working conditions that is our right as TSSU members is just one of the many crucial tasks set to the Coordinator, in cooperation with the other members of the TSSU's Salaried Officers. I am thoroughly committed to representing the interests of our members by assisting in the efforts in this bargaining year to increase the visibility of the TSSU and the need for greater rights and benefits for Sessionals, Tutor-Markers, Teaching Assistants, and hopefully Research Assistants. I look forward to continuing as Coordinator for another term.
In Solidarity,
Carina Nilsson
For the position of TSSU Chair as sought by Kevin Partridge
I am a second year MA student in the department of Sociology and Anthropology. I was initially involved in the TSSU social justice committee before becoming a grad student. I am currently the secretary of the TSSU and one of the chairs of the bargaining committee. I am still involved in the SA student union as a grad liaison and actively involved in our grad caucus as a council representative at the Grad Student Society.
I originally attended SFU in the 1980s as an undergrad before leaving school due to rising costs and shrinking student aid. I am returning to school now to see that things have gotten much worse in the intervening years. I strongly believe that access to education is a basic right that should be available to everyone with the desire and the ability. Having spent many years out of school before returning, I would bring much experience working within a variety of organizations. I am articulate, a good listener and have already proven my ability to work with many of the people already involved in the union and on many different committees. I am very much aware that this year the union is under significant pressure due to the expiration of our current contract and the current pressures from the provincial government and the university administration. I have a strong commitment to the progressive, feminist politics that the TSSU endorses. I am very much interested in not only defending and expanding our rights as workers but also our rights as students and people. I would be pleased to fill the position of chair in order to facilitate the smooth coordination of some of the many meetings that are important to the functioning of our union.
In solidarity,
Kevin
