40th Anniversary website launched!

In 2018, TSSU celebrates 40 years of certification. We were first certified as a union in 1978, and we have been an independent, feminist, non-hierarchical, and directly democratic organization ever since. In celebration of our history and our all of our members' hard work, we're eagerly counting down to December 7th and 8th, the weekend of TSSU's 40th Anniversary Celebration!

We have a lot of exciting events planned, and we're inviting all TSSU members, past and present, to take part. To kickoff the weekend, we're hosting dinner, drinks, and trivia at Club Ilia on Friday, December 7th. Food and drinks are on us, but boning up on your trivia skills is on you. Let us know you're coming HERE.

Then, on Saturday, December 8th, we're moving downtown to SFU Harbour Centre for the TSSU 40th Anniversary Labour School. There's going to be interactive workshops, panels, walking tours, and more, featuring labour organizers and activists from across the Lower Mainland. Lunch and snacks will be provided, and it's absolutely free. Register for the labour school HERE.

Finally, we'll be capping off our celebration with a huge 40th Birthday Party at Lost & Found Cafe, featuring a taco dinner, drinks, cake, piñata, music, and prizes. All members who attend receive dinner, cake, and one free drink each. RSVP for the party HERE. If you are a past TSSU member or collaborator and wish to attend, please email us at 40th@tssu.ca.

TSSU has been a vital voice for teachers at SFU for four decades now, and we want everybody who has been a part of this experience to celebrate with us. And don't forget to submit your piece to TSSU's special collection, Equity, Security, Solidarity, Action: Reflection and Celebration of TSSU at 40. We want to publish your essays, drawings, collages, graphic design pieces, comics, stories, plays, poems, etc. to help our community recognize, critique, and appreciate the foundations of our union, look forward to TSSU's future, and provide a resource for future members and activists.

All Workers Invited! Fair Employment Week Social

Fair Employment Week is coming up, and to celebrate TSSU is hosting a Club Ilia Social for all workers at SFU. TAs, TMs, Sessionals, and ELC/ITP Instructors are all invited, of course, but if you're a Research Assistant, Custodian, Food Service Worker, Professor, Clerical Worker -- in other words, if you're a worker at Simon Fraser University -- you are invited!

We'll be meeting at Club Ilia, located next to the Burnaby campus bus loop in the Cornerstone Building, beginning at 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 18th. Mark your calendars and tell your friends, TSSU members and otherwise. Appetizers are on us, so come by, have a bite, maybe grab a drink, and enjoy!

TA/TM Day and Social - Friday, September 7th

This Friday, September 7th will be the 33rd Annual Fall TA/TM Day at the SFU Burnaby campus. Presented in collaboration with the Teaching & Learning Centre, TA/TM Day is a perfect opportunity to learn more about your TA or TM responsibilities, develop your teaching skills, grab a free lunch, and get a handle on the particularities of teaching at SFU. All TA/TM Day sessions are free to TSSU members, and no registration is required. More importantly, all members are entitled to up to 6 hours of paid professional development time per appointment. So make sure to keep track of those TA/TM Day hours!

TA/TM Day features 22 different workshops for teachers of every experience level and disciplinary background. TSSU is offering two especially important sessions for first-time TAs and TMs in the 10:15 - 11:00 am and 1:45 - 3:00 pm time slots. If you are new to teaching at SFU, don't miss them! Then cap off the day with TSSU's one and only TA/TM Day Social at the Diamond Alumni Centre at 4:30 pm for free dinner, free drinks, prizes, games, and more. After that, we're moving to Club Ilia at 8:00 pm. Come to one or both, get a free meal, and meet your fellow TAs and TMs. All TSSU members are invited, regardless of whether you attend TA/TM Day.
