TSSU’s October General Membership Meeting is on Monday 23rd October, 4.30-6.30, on Surrey campus in room 3240. Dinner is provided, and all members are welcome to attend. General meetings are the principal decision-making body of the union, where all members are able to speak, vote, and set the agenda. They also provide a great opportunity to find out what the union is doing, what issues are affecting different departments and the university as a whole, and to meet new people. We run three GMs each semester, taking place on Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver campuses. See our calendar for more information on this and our other committee meetings.
Current proposed agenda items for the meeting include:
- Closing of nominations for TSSU Executive positions - see here for more details, including how to nominate yourself
- Update of current TSSU grievances
- Information on Fair Employment Week and the BC Health Coalition conference
- TSSU audit report update
- Potential solidarity actions with OPSEU (Ontario Public Service Employees Union) and VTU (Vancouver Tenants Union)

Proposed changes to TSSU By-Laws
The TSSU General Membership meetings on Mon 29 May and Thu 22 Jun included presentation of a motion to pass the following proposed version of the union's By-Laws and Policies. The changes included have been discussed in previous General Membership meetings, as well as TSSU's Internal Relations committee. The content of the By-Laws and Policies in this proposed version is otherwise unchanged from the version currently in effect.
This proposed version includes the following changes:
- the replacement of gendered pronouns (e.g. 'she', 'hers', 'he', 'him', 'his') with appropriate nouns where possible (e.g. 'the member', 'Salaried Officer', 'that candidate'), and gender neutral pronouns elsewhere (e.g. 'they', 'them', 'theirs');
- the inclusion of a Preamble prior to By-Law A., which explains the reasoning and context of these proposed changes;
- the inclusion of 'gender' to By-Law B.(a)
See here for the complete text of the proposed By-Laws and Policies. This version presents the current text of the By-Laws and Policies in one column, and the proposed changes in another, with highlighted sections where the changes occur. The changes presented here will be voted on during the Tue 1 Aug General Membership meeting in Surrey.
