Childcare Fund: Apply by September 24th!

All TSSU members (as defined by the TSSU By-laws) with children under the age of 13, or those with children up to the age of 18 requiring additional care due to a physical or developmental disability, are eligible to apply for the TSSU Membership Childcare Fund.

The deadline to apply for the Childcare Fund during the Fall 2018 disbursement period will close on Monday, September 24th. However, there will also be a late application period, for the disbursement of funds during Spring 2019, which will close on Wednesday January 23rd.

Funds will be provided based on the SFU Child Care Society (CCS) rates as of September 1, 2017, according to the age of each child on the first day of the semester (see below for chart). Applications may require supplementary documentation of each child's age (birth certificate, passport, notarized letter, etc.), but these do not need to be provided during the application process. Important update regarding Guard.me refund status

Following the emails received from many TSSU members regarding the status of their Guard.me grievance settlement refunds, TSSU has been in email discussions with SFU about the delivery of these funds.

Unfortunately and without communication with TSSU, SFU decided to pay out the refunds in two steps:

1) Those with current TSSU contracts in Spring 2017 received a payment through payroll

2) Remaining recipients were sent cheques to the last known address

We are advised that the cheques were sent out Monday, April 24th.

If SFU wanted to pay people in a timely and reasonable way, they would have attempted an electronic transfer using the banking information you currently have on file; this is the normal process. However, they did not choose to do this in relation to the Guard.me settlement.  Given that many members leave at the end of the Spring semester, and that many renters who move do not make arrangements to have mail forwarded, due to the cost, we are very concerned that SFU's chosen method of payment will deny people the refund they're owed.

If you have not received your refund through payroll, and do not receive a cheque by the end of this week, please contact benefits@sfu.ca to inquire about your refund.  You can ensure that your banking information is up-to-date in the SFU system, and have the funds electronically transferred.  When writing to benefits, please copy settlement@tssu.ca so we can follow up on your behalf.
